By the dead fountain in front of Union Station, a woman knelt over a man lying face down on the ground. She was urging him to get up and eat a gummy bear.
“Sit up for me so I know you’re alright,” Ami Angell said. “C’mon mate, get up.”
When he didn’t answer, she grew worried that he’d overdosed, and called 911.
Nearby, a woman was taking a selfie, preoccupied with getting the Capitol in the background.
Little noticed amid the daily buzz of travelers and commuters are the handful of outreach workers like Angell who roam Union Station doing what they can to help the homeless.
